Technician shift swap without dispatcher intervention?

Ray — short answer is no, not out of the box. Technicians can't directly swap assigned jobs with each other.

What we ended up doing: gave two of our senior techs "Manager" permissions on a limited basis. They can reassign within their own team, but not see everything. Still requires someone with elevated access to actually move things.

Pro tip: If you go this route, set up a simple Slack or Teams channel where they post swap requests. First one to claim it gets it, then one of your managers does the actual reassignment. Cuts down on the back-and-forth at least.

There's a feature request floating around for true peer-to-peer swaps. Worth upvoting if you find it.

Alternative approach:

• Create a shared calendar view that techs can see but not edit
• They coordinate swaps via text/whatever
• One person (you or a designated lead) batches the changes once daily

Not elegant, but it's 30 seconds per swap instead of constant interruption. We've run this way for 8 months with 15 techs.

The real answer is — don't let them touch the schedule directly. You'll end up with double-booked jobs and nobody taking accountability.

As Josh and Sylvia noted, FieldPulse doesn't currently support technician-initiated shift swaps without dispatcher or manager involvement. Here's what is possible:

1. Technician self-scheduling — if enabled, techs can claim unassigned jobs from the mobile app, but cannot reassign jobs already assigned to someone else.
2. Manager role delegation — you can designate team leads with limited reassignment permissions, as Josh described.

From a workflow perspective, most teams handle this through:

• A structured request channel (Slack, Teams, etc.)
• Batch updates at set times (morning, lunch, end of day)

I can confirm this is on our product roadmap for 2026, though I don't have a specific release date yet. I'd recommend subscribing to the H2 Roadmap announcement for updates.

yo just jumping in here but like basically what we do is just have the guys text our group chat and whoever's on dispatch that day just drags and drops when they get a sec, it's not that deep lol — the app doesn't crash or anything if you move stuff around a lot so that's cool at least

tbh the real problem is when two guys both think they got the same swapped shift and you didn't see the second text in time. that's happened like twice and it's awkward but we figured it out
