We're experiencing what I assume many of you are seeing: significantly longer lead times to fill open technician positions, and more poaching from competitors than I've seen in my ten years in operations. Our current time-to-hire for experienced HVAC and electrical technicians has stretched from 6 weeks to 14 weeks.
I'm curious how other field service organizations are responding strategically. Specifically:
- Are you investing more heavily in apprenticeship and "grow your own" programs, or focusing on competitive compensation for external hires?
- How are you adjusting service capacity planning when headcount is uncertain?
- What retention investments are showing measurable returns?
We are piloting a tuition reimbursement program for employees pursuing relevant certifications, but it's too early to assess impact. I would welcome any data others can share on what's actually moving the needle.
