How often do your techs update job status in real time vs. end of day?

So I've been doing this electrical work for about 12 years now, and I've used a bunch of different systems. FieldPulse is fine, but here's my question — how often are your guys actually updating job status in real time?

In my experience, the dispatchers want everything updated instantly, but when you're up on a ladder dealing with live wires, you're not pulling out your phone every five minutes. My crew tends to batch it — mark everything at the end of the day or during lunch breaks. Seems to work fine.

But I keep hearing from management that we're "not utilizing the real-time features." Is this actually a problem for anyone else, or just us?

  • Another way to think about it: real-time updates aren't for the technicians, they're for the next customer waiting and the dispatcher managing exceptions.

That said, "real-time" doesn't mean "constant." We trained our team on three touch points:

    1. En route (so customer knows)
    2. On-site started (so dispatch knows clock is running)
    3. Complete with notes (so next tech or billing isn't blocked)

Anything more frequent is optional based on job complexity. Our completion rates went up when we stopped demanding updates every 15 minutes.

  • what about jobs that run long and blow up the afternoon schedule. thats when i need to know

i dont need updates on routine stuff but if youre 90 min into a 45 min job i need a heads up before im calling the next customer with bad news
